It is Never too Early to Begin Childhood Dental Care

As adults, we understand the importance of taking care of your teeth, but it is never too early to learn that lesson.

Pediatric Dental Clinic in Greensboro NC Area

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, as soon as your child has their first tooth or first birthday. This may seem very early to some, but early checkups ensure baby teeth come in properly and show no signs of decay or gum issues. Some children get their baby teeth as early as six months, so their first dental appointment should be scheduled as soon as the first tooth peeks through.

Even before the child has a tooth, the parent should wipe the child’s gums off with a soft cloth. This is the first type of dental hygiene for infants.

If you are located in or near Greensboro, North Carolina, you are fortunate because you are close to the office of Dr. Sona J. Isharani. Dr. Isharani is experienced in providing dental hygiene for infants and young children. She will explain what she is doing to make the child more comfortable.

Tooth Decay is Nearly Preventable:

Tooth decay is the most common childhood disorder, and in most cases, if the child had regular dental care, it could have been prevented. Many parents wait until their children are three or four, by this time, many children are experiencing some dental decay. If a child has a bad first experience at the dentist, having a filling could taint their experience, leaving them fearful of the dentist.

Preventative dental care is crucial for the child’s overall good health.

What to Expect at Your Child’s First Checkup?

The first dental checkup should occur when the child has their first tooth, but what will happen at that appointment? Here are some tips to prepare parents on what to expect from their child’s first dental appointment.

  • While your child may be very young, you should still positively talk to them about the appointment.
  • You may want to get one of the many books on the market about visiting the dentist.
  • You may want to prepare them for the appointment by having them open their mouth wide so that they will be familiar with the activity.
  • Always speak positively about dental visits to reduce anxiety.
  • During the visit, the dentist will check the child’s teeth, gums, and teeth.
  • The hygienist or dentist will usually clean the child’s teeth.
  • They will then explain to the child how to properly brush and flow their teeth (if they are old enough to understand).
  • Reward your child following the dental visit.
