Pediatric Dental Tips You Can Help Teach Your Children from Home

When seeking a trusted pediatric dentist in the Greensboro, North Carolina area, parents visit Triad Pediatric Dentistry and Dr. Sona Isharani. Dr. Isharani is a certified pediatric dentist who is excellent at handling children and providing them with the unique dental experience they need. When it comes to early dental care for children, part of this includes educating parents on how they can assist in their children’s teeth development. As you may know, teaching young children healthy dental habits is not always the easiest task. At a young age, children can struggle to understand why keeping their teeth and gums clean is important.

Early Dental Care for Children in Greensboro NC Area

Here are some good dental habits you can help instill in your children, so they understand how dental health is important.

Daily Oral Hygiene Habits

As adults, we know that brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing daily are vital to maintaining excellent oral health. As a parent, it is crucial you pass these same good habits down to your children. Making sure your children understand the importance of brushing twice daily and flossing daily will play a significant role in keeping their oral health in great shape as their teeth and jaw develop. A great way to do this is to “practice what you preach.” Make sure your children see that you are brushing and flossing. Make it a family activity as you are helping establish these habits in your children. You can even let your children pick their own fun toothbrush and toothpaste to enhance their excitement for teeth cleaning.

Limit Sugary and Acidic Foods and Drinks

When your intake of sugary and acidic foods and drinks is high, they will slowly wear down your teeth’ enamel, lead to staining, and increase your risk of cavities. These foods do not have to be completely removed, but they should be limited. Timing is also important – you should not have these foods or drinks right before bed. When it comes to your children, moderation is key. It is important to teach your children that enjoying these foods is fine, as long as it is in moderation. Creating a habit of drinking water to help rinse these treats out of their mouths is also helpful. If your children respond better to visuals, show them research done on the effects of sugary and acidic foods on teeth. As with many other habits, you can assist their learning by being a good example yourself.

Avoid Using Teeth as A Tool

While this topic may seem silly at first, the reality is that we can probably think of a time when we used our teeth to help open a package, bend a material, and more. Using your teeth for activities other than chewing food can put them at risk of damage. While our teeth are hard and resilient, it is still not too difficult to cause a chip or break in a tooth when biting on something hard which is not food. And if you damage your tooth down to the root, you could risk losing that tooth. This can all be prevented by using your teeth only to chew food. You should teach your children to do the same.

These are just a few tips and habits you can pass on to your children. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Sona Isharani to learn more about pediatric dental care, please call (336) 804-8668.

Lauren H

Took my 2 year old in for his first appointment. I had a very good experience. The people on staff are friendly and easy to talk to. My kid was able to be his usual lively self. This helped me while I talked with Dr. Isharani and her assistant. They pulled up his favorite TV show on YouTube while they explained his dental care needs at this age. Also had little car toys and rattles. This is a super warm and professional practice. I would definitely recommend it. I came out learning how to better assist my kid’s oral hygiene. And my kid was able to enjoy himself!
