Kids’ teeth suffer from sports drinks

More kids are getting involved in sports at a young age. It is a great way to keep them physically active, growing into fit bodies. As they face a barrage of media featuring athletes consuming sports and energy drinks, it is natural for kids to ask for these beverages. However, sports drinks can be harmful to developing teeth.

Sports drinks usually contain electrolytes to replace sodium and potassium lost through perspiration. They may also have caffeine and large amounts of cavity-causing sugar. Even sugar-free sports drinks are high in acids, eroding tooth enamel in as little as five days. In research, energy drinks were found to have the highest levels of acidity. Damage is irreversible, causing sensitivity and increasing risk of tooth decay.

Plain, fresh water remains the best way to keep your active kid hydrated. If you do allow sports or energy drinks, encourage your child to swish with water afterward, or chew sugar-free gum with xylitol to normalize acid levels. Brushing immediately after consuming sports drinks can increase dental erosion by spreading acid onto more tooth surfaces.

Keep tot’s teeth in tip-top shape
As the parent or caregiver for a young child, you naturally want to do all you can to keep the little one smiling. Dr. Sona Isharani is Board-certified in pediatric dentistry. She shares these tips to keep your tot’s teeth healthy.
  • If your child sleeps with a bottle or carries a sippy cup, keep it filled with plain, fresh water. Save milk and juice for mealtimes.
  • Brush your child’s teeth after each meal whenever possible. However, remember that bedtime is most important for oral hygiene.
  • Start on a new toothbrush every other month. Kids like to chew on soft bristles, so their toothbrushes don’t last as long as yours.
  • If your child is sick, apply toothpaste to a clean finger or cotton swab, then to the toothbrush, to avoid contaminating the whole tube.
  • Schedule dental appointments early in the day, before naptime, when baby is less likely to be tired and cranky.
  • Allow your child to bring a favorite blanket or toy into the exam room. It can be a big comfort and helpful distraction, as he or she grows accustomed to dental treatment.

Patient Reviews

"Wonderful experience from the time we made the appointment through the visit. This staff and dentist clearly understand how to make a dental exam/appointment run as smooth as it can with a two year old. My daughter loved her visit! We will see you all again in six months! "
